Spinner dolphins return to Tamarin Bay nearly every morning, a behavioral pattern driven by the bay's protection from ocean swells and its position along their nocturnal feeding routes. The species is named for its acrobatic leaps, spinning several times along a vertical axis before re-entering the water. Researchers estimate that resident pods number between 20 and 40 individuals, though group size fluctuates as dolphins join or leave the aggregation. The bay itself curves along Mauritius' Black River district, framed by Montagne du Rempart to the south and opening northwest into the Mozambique Channel. Its shallow entry and gradual depth gradient create a resting zone where dolphins socialize and recover energy after hunting in deeper water overnight. By mid-morning, most pods have exited the bay, making dawn the decisive window for observation. Boat-based excursions dominate dolphin watching at Tamarin, as the animals typically remain 200 to 500 meters offshore. Operators launch from the public beach, and most trips last between 90 minutes and two hours. Shore-based observation is possible from the southern rocks near the surf break, though distance limits detail.
